About The Event

Ikenobo is considered the origin of Ikebana and is the oldest school of Japanese flower arranging. In 1977, Ikenobo headmaster Sen’ei Ikenobo introduced a revolutionary new style called “Shoka shimputai”. Shimputai includes elements of traditional shoka but is presented with a modern and nontraditional aesthetic. True to ikenobo, the rules of shoka shimputai reflect an appreciation for nature and respect for the seasonal beauty of plants.

This workshop will outline a brief history and theory of Shoka shimputai followed by a short demonstration to highlight the principles of this style. Workshop attendees will each create their own arrangement.

Please bring: a vase that will hold a kenzan (pin frog), preferably with a flat edge opening or mouth (example: a suiban or traditional shoka vase)), hasami (floral scissors), a towel and a bucket for water and flowers. Floral material will be provided.  Registration is currently open for this special workshop and demonstration.
